Cabinet formation talks halted...until Mugabe returns

Robert Mugabe opted to leave for some United Nations summit instead of resolving the issue of the llocation of posts in the new cabinet that was expected following he signing of the GNU deal September 15. Sources within the MDC-M and MDC-T told the Tribune that the issue of the allocation of cabinet posts has temporarily been put on hold, to resume when Mugabe comes back from the UN.

Mozambique plane crash kills seven South Africans

 A plane which ran out of fuel has crash-landed in Mozambique, killing seven South Africans, state television reported.Televisao de Mozambique (TVM) said yesterday seven bodies burnt beyond recognition were removed from the wreckage of the South African-registered plane.The aircraft was coming from the central province of Zambezia when it crashed in the densely-populated Beira suburb of Palmeiras late on Saturday.

ANC to nominate deputy leader as president

 The ruling African National Congress will name party deputy head Kgalema Motlanthe as South Africa's caretaker leader after the ousting of President Thabo Mbeki, ANC members of parliament said on Monday. ANC leader Jacob Zuma made clear his backing for Motlanthe as he pledged that the party would ensure a smooth transition and economic policy continuity despite the biggest political crisis since the end of apartheid in 1994.

Enoch Sontonga: South African Composer

 The origins of Enoch Sontonga and the song he wrote, Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika are humble and rather obscure. Enoch Sontonga, from the Mpinga clan, of the Xhosa nation, was born in the Eastern Cape in about 1873. It is believed that he received training as a teacher at Lovedale Institution and was then sent to a Methodist Mission school in Nancefield, near Johannnesburg.
